Underwriting Portfolio Analyst | High-Growth MGA | Bristol(Hybrid)| Full-Time | Up to £55k + Benefits
About the Company
Our client is a fast-growing specialty insurance business dedicated to bringing technical excellence, operational agility, and data-led decision-making to the insurance marketplace. Operating across claims, underwriting, operations, technology, and partner networks, they combine deep industry expertise with modern analytics to build sustainable, highly profitable specialty insurance programs.
As they continue to scale their multi-product portfolio and expand their distribution partnerships, they are looking for a commercially curious, data-driven Underwriting Portfolio Analyst to join their team.
This role offers significant exposure to senior leadership and the opportunity to directly influence underwriting decisions and portfolio strategy across a high-growth MGA platform.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Head of Underwriting, this is a hands-on, high-impact analytical role designed for someone who takes total ownership of portfolio performance. You will act as the key analytical engine behind product and distribution partner performance - running and maintaining underwriting models, evaluating claims experience, and uncovering emerging trends, risks, and commercial opportunities.
We are looking for an analyst who goes beyond simply reporting data to explain why trends are happening, identify underlying drivers, and recommend actionable commercial or underwriting changes.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor product and distribution partner performance, tracking key insurance metrics including loss ratios, frequency, severity, premium development, and profitability.
Maintain, run, and refine underwriting and pricing models to support strategic portfolio management and rate monitoring.
Analyze claims experience across various lines and distribution channels to identify emerging risks, performance anomalies, and growth opportunities.
Translate complex data into clear commercial narratives, delivering actionable recommendations to senior leadership on underwriting actions, pricing adjustments, and capacity allocation.
Partner closely with underwriting, actuarial, claims, and operations teams to align portfolio insights with broader commercial goals.
Skills & Competencies
Advanced Excel skills combined with a deep, practical understanding of insurance performance metrics (loss ratios, frequency/severity, premium development).
The ability to look past surface-level data, probe underlying drivers, and articulate clear commercial actions to decision-makers.
Proficiency with or strong desire to leverage tools like Power BI, SQL, or Python to enhance reporting efficiency and insight depth.
A self-starter mindset with the confidence to take ownership of portfolio reporting and proactively highlight risks or opportunities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of summarizing complex analytics into clear executive summaries.
Qualifications & Experience
3–5 years of experience in insurance portfolio analytics, underwriting, pricing, or actuarial analysis (preferably within an insurer or MGA environment).
We are also open to high-potential, more junior candidates with strong analytical capability, commercial curiosity, and a fast learning trajectory.
Solid grasp of specialty insurance, delegated authority, or MGA program business model metrics.
